Questions to Ask Yourself Before Working from Home

For so many people, working from home is the ultimate dream! They imagine themselves sitting at the computer in their pajamas, making their own hours, and being in charge of their day. Ah, that does sound amazing, doesn’t it?But let’s be honest. Working from home is often much more difficult than people realize, and it’s just not for everyone. If you’ve been thinking that you’d like to work from home, whether it’s running your own business or working for someone else, it’s vitally important to know if you’re truly ready to take the plunge.

Are you self-motivated?
Whether you’re working from home for yourself or for someone else, you’ll have to be self-motivated. There won’t be anyone stopping by your desk to make sure you’re working or to encourage you to keep going on those rough days. You’re going to have to be able to motivate and inspire yourself to keep plugging away. Are you prepared to do that?

 Are you a procrastinator?
You’ll have a hard time managing a freelance business if you’re always putting work off until the last minute. Yes, working from home can mean setting your own hours, but you can’t fall into the habit of procrastinating. That will only result in added stress for you, and maybe even sub-par quality of work, which isn’t going to be acceptable to your clients and customers. You just can’t run a business that way. You have to focused and on schedule, and make sure you’re getting things done on time. Are you up for that?
Do you have extra money set aside?
Unless you’re going into working from home with a remote part-time job already lined up, it’s a good idea to have some extra money in the bank. Contract and freelance positions can come and go, and you may have to survive long breaks in between assignments. On top of that, until you get your business established, it’s highly possible you won’t be making much money. It’s always a good idea to have a little “nest egg” to fall back on in the event of an unexpected drought in work and income. How much money do you have set aside for those periods when funds might be tight? I recommend enough cash to pay 2 months of bills.

 Do you have short and long-term plans?
If you were working a traditional job, you’d likely have hopes and dreams for advancement. When working from home, you can’t wait for someone to give you a raise or a fancy title. Instead, you need to know from Day One what your goals are for the future. Where do you want to go? You need to have a plan in place to help you reach those goals. If you have not put together a business plan and/or a goal for the future, you are not ready to work from home. Is your business plan ready to go?
Can you network?
Working from home and building a business requires lots of networking. While in a traditional job work just comes to your desk every day, when you work from home you have to bring in your own clients and customers. Luckily, modern networking isn’t too difficult, thanks to social media. But it does take time and skill to see results, and you have to be committed to marketing yourself and your business if you want it to grow. Are you ready to start networking?

Do you have a backup plan?

The fact of the matter is, working from home may not be a good fit for you. It’s been my experience that you’re not going to know for sure until you do it. But every smart girl has a backup plan just in case things don’t work out, so before you commit to working from home, make sure you know what you’ll do if things go south. Hopefully you’ll never have to implement that plan, but you’ll have peace of mind knowing it’s there if you need it. What’s your backup plan?

Simple and Healthy Lunches for virtual Assistant

It can be a real challenge figuring out how to feed yourself properly without overeating when you work from home, since the kitchen is always right there! It’s also tricky to do so without a lot of fuss because time can be tight on workdays. I want my workday lunch to be healthy and uncomplicated, but also somewhat attractive. It’s hard, though. It’s so easy to just shove some snacks or leftovers in your mouth throughout the day, never taking the time to realize what you’re eating… let alone enjoy it!

I think it’s important, when possible, to have a break away from your desk for a nice meal. Having a proper lunch on a nice plate or tray feels like a little indulgent break in the middle of the workday, but it’s also good for you and discourages mindless eating. With the warm weather, if you can take your meal outside and get some fresh air, it’ll be even more refreshing. Though, if you just want to eat your nice lunch while watching YouTube videos, I get it, believe me!

These simple and healthy lunches for Virtual Assistant  are currently my easy, lovely summer workday meals.
Mediterranean platter. Probably my favorite type of meal is a sort of snack-tray lunch. Obviously, you can change this up to your liking, but just to get you started here are my favorite ingredients:
 A small hunk of feta (or sometimes I substitute for whatever cheese we have on hand)
 Black olives
 Cucumbers and tomatoes
 A little sea salt
 Plain yogurt mixed with dill
 Hummus or beans
 Crackers
Slice the cucumber and tomatoes and sprinkle with sea salt. Put olives, yogurt, and hummus or beans into little bowls or as dollops on a plate. Spread everything out on a tray. Serve with your favorite lunch beverage. I’m a big sparkling water fan, but if you’re your own boss, you could go full Mediterranean and have a small glass of red wine! The whole meal looks really festive and also like a lot of food.
Ploughman’s lunch. Another snacky-type lunch. This one includes:
 Sliced meats, like turkey or ham
 A handful of almonds
 Whatever veggies you have on hand
 A hunk of cheddar
 Adding a nice piece of bread would make this lunch even more delightful
Basically, this one follows the same instructions as for the Mediterranean platter, above.
Zoodles with marinara. I am late to the Zoodles party, but now that I’ve had them I’m in love! These are quick and easy to make if you have a spiralizer, and only need to be cooked for a few minutes. There is really only three ingredients in Zoodles:
 Zucchini
 Olive oil or other cooking oil
 Sea salt
I top with a simple homemade marinara made from fire-roasted canned tomatoes, balsamic, olive oil, spices, etc. It makes a big, pretty bowl of food and is great when feeling like a hot lunch for a change.These are the three afternoon meals I’m currently loving. I think what I like most is just taking the brief pause in my day to take care of myself. Bonus points if it’s Instagram worthy!

Reasons to Partner With a Virtual Assistant

It’s time to start thinking about how to make  the best year ever for your blog or business.
If you’re like most solopreneurs, you’ve realized that running a business is a lot of work and sometimes, it’s simply not possible to do it all yourself. Partnering with a Virtual Assistant is a great way to free up some of your time to focus on the bigger, more important aspects of your business, while letting someone else manage the little tasks that are often so time-consuming.

What kinds of tasks can a VA handle for you? Here are just a few things you can delegate to her:
  • Social media management;
  • Email management;
  • Creating pinnable images for blog posts;
  • Monitoring blog and social media statistics;
  • Moderating blog comments;
  • Responding to customer service inquiries.

What are the biggest benefits for partnering with a Virtual Assistant? For starters:
  1. Are there things that need to be done for your business, but you don’t know howto do them? Let a VA handle them for you.
  2. How about the things that need to be done in order for your business to grow and thrive, but you simply don’t have time to do them? Yep, a VA can take care of those tasks for you.
  3. What about those things that are essential to running a successful business, but you just don’t like to do them? A VA would be more than happy to assist.

And there are so many other great reasons to partner with a Virtual Assistant. A truly dedicated VA will strive for your success because when you succeed, so does she. She considers herself a partner in your business, and when you achieve your blogging or business goals, it’s a win for her, too.

What Social Media Can Do For Your Business?

If you’re a blogger or small business owner, you may be wondering just what social media can do for your business. Let’s start off by saying, SO MUCH!

Your Business Website

You have a website that talks about your products and services. Good move on your part; however, now it just sits there waiting for visitors. How are you going to attract people to your site? Why, advertising and promotion, of course.
But while simply using social media to promote your products and services might prompt a few people to visit your website, you’re going to need to do more than that if you really want your business to grow. Adding an eye-catching image, as well as a catchy headline, will work wonders! You’ve got to grab people’s attention!

Social Media Platforms

There are so many social media platforms to use nowadays, and more are being developed as we speak. The most important platforms to use, in my opinion, are Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Instagram, Pinterest, and Google Plus are trailing behind them, but should still be taken seriously when it comes to promoting your blog or business.
These social media accounts are relatively easy to set up but remember, you’re going to have to work at them. You can’t create accounts and then simple expect people to visit your site. You need to be actively promoting your business on these outlets, as well as networking with like-minded people.

Networking

Networking with people online is the easiest thing to do via social media. You can search each platform for those in your particular niche, and then reach out to people and just say “Hi”, as you would in day-to-day life. Follow people on Twitter and Facebook. Connect with them on LinkedIn. Promote some of their products or services, and then watch them return the favor to you!

Give and Take

Owning a business and being socially active online cannot be a one-way street. You need to give some and take some. Develop a section on your website for News or a Blog and start writing content. Share the content across social media. That should help attract potential customers. Also, don’t forget the “give” part. Visit other websites in your business niche and comment on their blogs and share them on your social media networks. If they’re part of your niche, you can bet your followers will be interested in their content!

Tips For Staying On Task When You Work from Home

The opportunity to work from home can be a great experience for so many people, because there’s so much freedom and possibility every day. But along with all that freedom comes the opportunity to make bad time management choices. Waste enough time, and you may find your home-based business is not as successful as you need it to be.
To help with day-to-day productivity, here are 7 tips for staying on task when you work from home.

How to Stay on Task When You Work from Home
1. Have a dedicated work space
I’ve talked about this before. I truly believe that to be successful when working from home, you must have a dedicated work space. This doesn’t have to be an entire room, although having your own office (with a door!) is awesome. Your dedicated space can be the dining room table, or a small desk in another room. I just really think you’re going to be more focused and more productive when you’re in your own space, as opposed to setting up your laptop on the sofa in front of the TV.
2. Have a dedicated work schedule
This is something else I’ve talked about many times. Create a daily work schedule and stick to it. Not only does this help you to plan and structure your day, but it lets clients and family members know when you’ll be working and when you’re off the clock.

3. Dress for success
I used to imagine that working from home meant lounging in my jammies all day, but I’ve found that I’m actually more productive and I feel better about myself when I get up, wash my face and brush my teeth, and actually get dressed. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but real clothes make me feel like I’m working in the real world, even if everything I do is online.
4. Give yourself a break
Have you ever noticed how easy it is to lose track of time and suddenly you realize you’ve been sitting at your desk for hours without a break? Taking short breaks throughout the work day is important because it gives your brain a chance to focus on something other than work for a few minutes, and it gives your body a chance to get up, stretch, and refuel. Stopping every 2-3 hours for a small snack, a short walk, or even to run a quick errand, will result in more focus when you get back to your desk to resume work.
.

5. Use anti-distraction software
The computer is a wonderful invention, but it can also be wonderfully distracting. Between all your different programs and the Internet, you can easily become distracted and waste precious time. Luckily, there are many different programs available that can help you stay on task, either by blocking certain websites for a set amount of time, or by limiting how many programs you can have open on your computer at a given time. In particular, the anti-distraction program Freedom has been popular for a while, and it even works on iOS devices like your iPhone or iPad. Take a look at what’s available, and you’re sure to find the perfect program to help you minimize work day distractions.
6. Use soundproofing
Soundproofing isn’t just for musicians! People who work from home can also benefit from blocking out noisy neighbors or family members. You can buy inexpensive soundproofing and put them up in your office. You might also try noise-canceling headphones and listen to some instrumental music or podcasts while you work.
7. Utilize your planner

Lastly, don’t discount the benefits of using a planner and sticking to a daily schedule. Plan out your day by making a to-do list, scheduling necessary phone calls, meetings, and projects, and you’ll find it’s much easier to use your time well and stay on task.
